PNG Files
Are they better?

PNG Stands for Portable Network Graphic.
A Portable Network Graphic is for storing a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression.  Png files can hold more than the 256 colors that a gif can hold and still retain a transparent background.  Png files can also support partial transparency, unlike gif files.

The difference between the different file formats is what they can and can not do.  A png file is limited to one layer while psp (Paint Shop Pro) and psd (Photo Shop) files can retain layers and all the layer information that goes with them.

When it comes to the images offered here, they are all single layer files so the layer information is not needed.

Png files can also be opened in almost any graphics program, while psp and psd files are limited.

Png's, psd's, psp tubes and psp files are all the same quality wise but the size of a png is far smaller; sometimes more than half the size of a psd as seen below.

This means that I can host more images for you and they will take up far less space on your computer.

I have made a few comparisons to show the difference in size of png's, psd's, psp files & psp tubs (tubes).

This is the Tink Fairy taken from one of the "free stuff" archives and is shown at 25% of it's original size.
The zip files are identical except for the file format inside and the image is at 100% its original size.
There is a readme file in each zip file and it is 2 kb.

Tink The Fairy PNG
zip file size 166 kb
Tink The Fairy PSP Tub
zip file size 219 kb
Tink The Fairy PSP
zip file size 232 kb
Tink The Fairy PSD
zip file size 402 kb

So for the record...
Yes, in my opinion png's are far better all the way around when it comes to the type of images offered here.
